Have you ever wanted to get a handle on how to play safe in the backcountry and still ski good lines? The Avalanche 1 covers all steps on avalanche safety at the recreational level. Skier/Snowboarder ability should be at the intermediate level and have a basic understanding of backcountry ski equipment.  

This four day Avalanche course covers all aspects of the avalanche phenomenon.

The Avalanche refresher training course is designed for recreationalists who are experienced backcountry skiers/riders, and or who have already taken or are interested in Canadian Avalanche Association AST 2 course.
This course is designed to better the student’s decision making process, make good decisions and increase leadership confidence in the field. The students have a considerable amount of time out front leading and making decisions in alpine terrain. The instructor’s focus is to provide mentorship, supervision and safety.

Athlete's get personal training and coaching from Jonny. The small groups gives our athlete's high quality instruction and coaching.

Length: 4 days. Can be done in two weekends.

Students will learn how to:

  • Interpret weather/avalanche forecasts to plan their day

  • Make good decisions based on current conditions and forecasts

  • Identify terrain which is prone to avalanching.

  • Identify and demonstrate good terrain choices when in the field.

  • Basic understanding of snowpack layering and make up.

  • Basic knowledge of snowpack stability tests and identification of suspect layers.

  • General understanding of different snowpacks and climates.

  • Identifying hazards

  • Understanding, practice and management of an avalanche incident.

  • Ski touring
